The Cooperrider-Kent Bog State Nature Preserve is a very small park near my house and seemed like a natural place to go to grab a quick activation. I arrived Sunday morning and it was grey and cold out. No precipitation, but it was a far cry from the weather of Saturday. I put the Chameleon whip with extension up on the back of the Jeep as there wasn’t really a good place to deploy elsewhere. There is a very small loop trail that is mostly wooden decking (it’s a bog, remember) so there’s not a lot of wandering or many places that I could operate. So it was back to the lot at the trailhead.
The antenna was up in minutes and I was on the air. In about an hour, I got 11 FT8 contacts on 40m and 20m. It was very quick. That was the goal!
What did I learn? I can deploy the whip on the Jeep and be on the air in under 5 minutes. I also learned that having mechanics gloves for deploying the whip is nice because cold metal isn’t fun to hold onto for very long.
No really great pictures this time. Just one from inside the Jeep where I was operating and one of the entrance to the trail.
Another park for the log!
